835 garbage?

I have a 3.5 inch capable single shot break action something-or-other old beat up 12 GA. gun that I thought would be a good to "leave-in-the-truck" as a "SHTF emergency gun." I had a gunsmith cut the barrel down to about 19 inches making it very light. I took it to the range to test it and shot it ONCE. I thought for a second I might have both broken my nose and dislocated my should at the same time! I have no plans to EVER shoot it again at ANYTHING with 3.5 inch shells. I even thought I might should put a warning label on it.

No joke. I was patterning 3.5s out of mine way back in the day and I almost lost my grip on a shot and barrel about kicked me in the @ss. 😂
Mine sure smacked them turkeys hard but I traded it for a gun cabinet that is less violent towards me

Quick back story…dad made me the gun cabinet, made out of all cedar. Went through a divorce and my ex b*%ch sold it in the brief time I was out of the home (got home back). I seen it 6 months or so later for sale on CL but financially couldn't afford it at that time. The guy selling it had bought it from a resell shop that my ex sold it to. So no fault of his

A couple years went by and I seen it on CL again and was able to trade for it

The first turkey I killed was with my 835. I was excited when I flipped the safety off and wrapped my thumb around the stock. When I touched off the 3.5 my thumb recoiled into my nose making my eyes all glassy like getting punched. I ran up to the flopping bird tripping and dodging trees because I couldn't see clearly.

When I started turkey hunting, my buddy said I needed a single shot 10 gauge H&R, so that is what I got. Then I stepped up to an 835 in the early 90's and never looked back. It was a cream puff compared to the 10!

Michael J Fox is very disappointed in your right now.

No one fully understands a "kick" unless they have shot 3.5" out of a 535. 835 has nothing on them! And YES 835's kick hard!
I was gonna say the same thing but you beat me to it. Very first turkey hunt I ever bought was back in 2010. I started hunting turkey at about 30 years old and I am self taught. But I bought the Mossberg 535 turkey thug and some 3.5" Winchester Double XX Turkey shells. I shot two rounds and said #$&@ no. It rattled my sphincter, 100% the hardest kicking gun I have ever shot in my life and I have shot some large caliber guns. Needless to say I dropped down to some 3" winchester longbeards. But I will say with a .660 Indian Creek I would put that gun against any other gun with lead or TSS. With #9 TSS in either a 2 3/4" or 3" shell it's amazing. I still pattern it every year for a backup and carry it occasionally and the only way I will get rid of it is to a family member. That's a pattern at 45 yards with 3",#9 TSS and an Indian Creek .660. That's not my gun but that's the exact model I have.
