Thanks to tnturkey30, I have got then 870 I want! 23 inch barrel, sure stock, supermag shooting 3.5s. Going to top it with the Nikon turkey scope.

I am debating now on the choke/shell combo. Would love to hear advice? Thanks.

My advice is to try to borrow some chokes and experiment with some different shells and see what patterns best in your particular gun. I tried some high dollar chokes in my 11-87 a while back along with some cheap Remington factory chokes and found out after some time on a pattern board that the cheapest of the bunch, a Remington turkey full gave me better patterns than the big dollar chokes. That choke with Winchester High velocity 5s has given me 3 50+ yard birds (out of three shot at), and is 100% out to 50 as well. I did have to shoot one bird at 45 yds a second time two years ago.

You don't have to have a $75+ choke or shells at $3.00 each to kill turkeys.

I shoot an Indian Creek .665 and 3.5" Nitro H517T shells (2 7/16 ounces of 4x5x7) and the 3.5" Magnum Blends (2 1/4 oz of 5X6X7). I have been very impressed on paper and more importantly in the field. The best advice anyone can give you is to try as many choke and ammunition combinations as possible to find exactly what your exact gun likes/prefers/patterns well with at the distances you typically shoot turkeys at. This make take a few years due to time/funding constraints. Best of luck.

"The Ventilator" shoots pretty well, but the best choke i've found so far, which happens to be the cheapest, is the HS Undertaker...shooting the Fed. Flight Control

I get very good #'s (~250) @ 40 yds in 10" with the 3.5" MagBlends and .665 IC tube.....

I wasn't too impressed with the JH .660 or .665 out of my gun using the Hevi #6's or MB's.....

23" polished barrel.

Im shooting a ssx with 3" 2 oz #6 and getting 150-160 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards with my remi 870 special purpose.

Thanks guys great advice. I think I am going to start with hevi magblends and a 665 tube, still debating which brand to start with. Anybody tried the custom chokes from sumtoy?

Also, either the 3" or 3 1/2" Hevi #7's should pattern well through the Jellyhead .660 tube. I got close to 300 pellets in a 40 yard 10" circle with either shell.

Hey Camaro12, did you polish the barrel on that 870sm I got off you?

Great info guys, thanks. More pondering to do.

One thing that bothered me on sum toys website was that he stated for his 40 yard choke, his tests showed that you need not shoot a turkey closer than 40 yards. You would be likely to miss. Ren, I know you are not sohtting a Remington but how has your choke performed at close distances?

Its the constriction thats important.
As well as the internal geometry. For example, some chokes (same restriction) are made to shoot flight control wads, where as most chokes are not. The difference is the internal geometry. Just something to be aware of.

Internal Geometry?? Its not rocket science, the differences are ported vs non ported, and then the length of the choke can make a difference on the taper....longer choke longer taper..but however .660 is .660 no matter how you slice it...I have shot many of the chokes over the years. Most of the difference is personal preference thats why so many different flavors available. I guarantee I can take a .660 or any kind and kill a turkey at 40 yds.......as far as flight contro wads they prefer non ported chokes so they say, theory is the ports strip the wad from the shot and the flight control wads are supposed to stay with the shot.

Internal Geometry??
Yes internal geometry, the MANY differences inside the various chokes that are offered today. This article may shed some light on internal geometry for those who have never heard of it. It is not breaking news as the article is dated 2008. http://allaboutshooting.com/article_inf ... ru6nkb0q27

My point is the same restriction does NOT equate to the same pattern results (shot count, how dense, POA/POI, etc etc) amongst the various turkey chokes today, many times because of the differences in internal geometry. Hope I was more clear in this effort of explaining what I mentioned in my previous post.

Andy is right, the exit diameter is really only part of the equation. The internal make up makes a different in conjunction with the exit construction.

take the SSX choke as an example. The exit diamter for a benelli gun in that choke is like .643 which is TIGHT but due to how the internal design is created it does not shoot as tight as a kicks or something else with a smooth design in the same construction.

Sumtoy, Indian Creek, SSX and Hevi chokes all use someone of the same design with minor modifications. the use a ring system to stop the wad rather then depend on the ports to do it. Where as if you look through a kicks or pure gold it has a smooth design using ports to slow the wad. Neither is wrong or right just the design they use to get what they determin as optimal.

all that said to get to the point that the exit diameter does not say all that needs to be said depending on maker, meaning a
660 jelly head may shoot a tighter pattern then a 650 sumtoy just due to design.
