A dying breed

If you say I missed your point, then I'm sure I did. I wasn't addressing you, though. I was addressing those who do lament. Inasmuch as you refer to the style you and I use as "traditional," however, it's possible that I may have been passively referring to your post.

While you may not be lamenting anything, you and I would be fools to think there aren't people who do and who find some level of ego in their ability to reminisce. That, as you also seem to believe, isn't good for the sport.

I can see where you think I missed your point. I can also see that in thinking I was addressing you, you missed mine. Not a big deal, either way.

I am 63 years old. When I first started turkey hunting I had my 12 year old girl to take with me. I liked it so much that I joined the NWTF. They had a youth turkey hunt. They set that date on the last day of the season,on public land. Shows you what they thought about the young hunters. When I mentioned to the lead individual that i had done some calling to birds his comment was "Educating them hu". He didn't try to explain what I was doing wrong, if anything just acted god almighty. I gathered my girl up and we went home, had a good hunt the next day on public land, didn't get anything. I dropped out of the NWTF haven't been back. The only way I had to learn turkey hunting was to watch Turkey Tapes. Anyone that i Knew that turkey hunted never had a word to say. I didn't know about internet Forums. I went thru the bit about scouting in the winter, sometimes I got ideas that helped me kill a turkey in spring. I have learnt that scouting does no good on public land. When the birds start gobbling everyone will fall on them, after they bust em, you have to have enough patience to wait for most people to go in and the bird start gobbling again, Or go back another day. Over the years the Turkey DVD became too much for me, it is all about the marketing. Don't get me wrong I'll use anything that I think will give me an advantage, I haven't had much of that. But some of the stuff they sell now days are for yuppies or fools. If anyone is lucky enough to have private land or access to public land that most people don't have they should feel blessed. It is far easier to learn how to turkey hunt without an audience. When you critize someone on how they turkey hunt keep in mind possibly how they had to learn to hunt. I am kind of reminded about the line between the traditional muzzleloaders and the inline muzzleloaders, All wasted effort. Be glad other people buy turkey tags and enjoy the sport. If not maybe you couldn't. Don't take much of what I said the wrong way, It wasn't meant like that. If some fool busts your setup instead of getting mad at him educate him, This might be all he knows.

Nobody is criticizing any style, just stating how things are changed and how some of us may or may not feel as if our style is disappearing. Nothing more, please don't read more into this than that.

For the record, for the 100th time I have killed a bird in TN on private ground in so long I can't remember the last one from private land. I hunt entirely on public land here.

Pretty humbling read sir and thank you for sharing. I agree and have experienced most of what you have described. Times have changed a bit, but big groups like NWTF and others often loose there focus the bigger they get. Its not the group as much as it is the people that are in it. Kinda like the Sierra Club, used to be a mountaineering group ran by John Muir now it is a bunch of tree hugging hippies that think, well I really dont know what they think because I cant get past their idiotic antics on global warming.

To me, "outdoors arrogance" is the most douche-bag of all arrogances.

You mean the arrogance of everyone seeming to be a pro? The family and I took a walk today down to the marina by our house, it was absolutely amazing the number of "pro" fisherman out today. Sad stuff when the guy fishing off the bank or the old couple catching crappie in a john boat are thought of as lesser fishermen because they dont own a $60k rig.

But one thing I have noticed about the people who have this "arrogance" with the outdoors, they are almost never happy. They are always stressed to kill that "big buck" or break the 500 number of duck kills in their blind, etc. Nothing beats the days when me and my granddad would sleep in the back of his truck next to KY lake on a weekend fishing trip or when we would all pile into my uncles camper on his farm and hunt for the weekend. No pressure of catching 30 pounds of bass or killing a 150", heck if anyone killed a deer with antlers they were considered the ultimate hunter of the weekend but regardless we went home the Sunday night with more memories than I ever could have imagined.

Dont get me wrong, I like to hunt for big/mature deer but it NEVER gets in the way of my hunting tradition. If the day comes and I get that arrogant flare about me I hope someone quickly puts me in my place.
