IMO woodhaven are a shell of what they once made, so much so I dont even bother with them anymore. Price and changes in materials and quality have me moving on to others these days. ZERO chance im paying $15 for a dang mouth call. The red wasp use to be my fav call by far but over the past 3 years or so they have changed the tape on them and they just dont blow the same anymore. Lots of good makers out there for cheaper, heck Yukrut on here makes a real good one and he can hook you up with some for a real good price.
Woodhaven went down the toilet fast when they got big and made thier calls even more expensive.
I used to love them 12 or plus years ago when they were relatively new. Thier staff also comes off as being arrogant to me, and although they sound good and have won a lot of titles, other calls in the right hands are just as good, plus not all mouth calls cost 15 dollars and not all pot calls cost 199.

yup! I was a big woodhaven fan 5-6 years ago for sure but seems not they are just about making money and coming up with something "NEW" each year to market (last year the black series and this year the ninja series). how you justify a mouth call being $15 is beyond me these days when it costs you about .35 to make. like i said Yekrut on here makes his own and sells them for cheap, RUSH calls are fantastic and Chad is a stand up guy that makes a heck of a mouth call for a cheap price all hand made. I use David Halloran mouth calls mostly now and they are not super cheap but 3 for $20 i can handle at this point.

My uncle was a dealer for them before they were really known. Quality was outstanding. Their pot calls were pure turkey. I got away from them prob 10 years ago. Check out hooks mouth calls. They're my all time favorite and they fit smaller palates better than any other that I've tried.

I've always wanted to try some of The Woodhaven calls but they're a little more than I want to spend for a call I might not be able to use good enough to hunt with.
Another brand of Mouth calls to look at is Appalachian Custom Calls
Made in East Tn.
I like them better and can use them easier than any I've tried in a few years.
I should have a Tennessee Lightning and a Tennessee Thunder in the mailbox today or tomorrow.

As far as I'm concerned woodhaven tanked when Jim pollard left....

For me it was him and Billy Yargus. Going to school at Auburn we would drive the short distance there and pick up calls from Mike. This was when the mouth calls came in plastic ziplock. The first aluminum call I owned he gave to me to try out, it was pure turkey and worked great until I broke the glass sounding board. About 10 years ago or more the wheels came off though and their calls are basic trash imo, plus mike got too big and turned into a real peach to work with. That's when I moved on to other calls. Mainly Darrin Dawkins who can't be beat

100% agree with that as I have a small narrow palate. Hooks & Houndstooth are all I use these days.

just an FYI for anyone that does not like the smaller fit, if you call hooks and ask for extra tape they will send you some with larger tape diameter to fit your mouth better for no charge.

Finally admitting you've got a big mouth :poke: :D

I'm still new to mouth calls so I really don't know what the difference is in the different reed cuts on the calls. Or like Woodhavens different colors in latex. That's why Ive acquired so many cause I don't know the difference so I'll buy one to try. It might work and it might not. A combo cut in one may not work in a different brand the same way. Thus meaning I would order some made from somebody but don't know what to ask for.

Good job on learning to use a mouth call. A very important tool for turkey hunting in my opinion.

One of the best benefits of a mouth call is using it for directional calling. Master this and finesse calling and you will be much deadlier this season.

Post a pic of the calls you like or feel comfortable with, from there myself or a bunch of the others can easily steer you in the right direction

For me I blow standard white latex in a split V or half moon the best, no more then 3 reeds. Generally I can buy any call from a decent company with those specs and run it fine

Same here. Split V and half moons are my go to.

I dunno if I could live without mouth calls. Locating birds more than 500 yards away, or sealing the deal when they are 50 yards away is where they shine. Don't weigh anything, take up no space in your pocket or fanny pack. And I just can't kee-kee on anything except a mouth call. I prefer a pot call when birds are between 50 and 500 yards, and still just can't figure out why in the heck anyone would use a box call over a mouth or pot :)

I've never once used a kee-kee in the spring woods.

Same here... never had to and no need to start.

Some people on OG were talking recently about how a kee kee will sometimes get a hung up gobbler to commit. I've never tried it myself but thought it was interesting.
