I've only ever heard ONE bird kee-kee in the spring.. a jake. I've raised 15 or so poults to 6 months or older in the past couple years... they kee-kee nonstop when raised without a mother until around 4 months, then get much quieter.
I will probably only kee-kee a couple times during a season. I've never called a gobbler in with it, but I've killed several gobblers that were henned up following the hens to the kee-kee. If the hens won't come to other calls, I'll throw the kee-kee at them at a last resort. It usually doesn't work on calling in hens that are preoccupied with something else, but sometimes it does, and I've never spooked hens using it.
The other time it works well is using it like one would use it in the fall. If the flock with gobbler that I'm working gets split up by coyotes, bobcats, (or heaven forbid- movement by my kids
), I'll reposition, wait 30 minutes, then kee-kee. Usually the jennies come first, and I've had the gobbler come back in following the girls.
My backyard is pretty noisy with all the chickens clucking, roosters crowing and dogs barking.... but I noticed last summer when the poults I was raising in an enclosed coop 20 yards away from the main flock would kee-kee- the adult hens really perked up and paid attention, yet ignored all the other barnyard noises.
Whining is a great call to use... both soft and loud. I use that all the time. Real hens will whine as loud as heck when they are pissed off by something. My boss hen is the master of the whine, and she'll usually let that one out shortly before she puts the other girls back in their place, kinda like one of my cats hisses before she attacks me
