A light at the end of the tunnel

I've never once used a kee-kee in the spring woods.

So? :D

A quick google search shows many who have used it in the spring to mix things up and have had success doing so. Obviously meglo is in that category and his success every spring just reinforces it.

I'm just glad that I never listened to other hunters when I was learning, and let the birds teach me.

There was no judgement, only a statement of fact. I have never used it, didn't say it wouldn't work. By all means use whatever calls you wish to kill one. Good news is at least a call is involved :D

I use mouth calls quite often but especially when birds are getting closer and I'm trying not to move. I do like a pot call but never worth a flip on a box. I still carry a HS Strut cutting 2.5 and love it. Bought a couple of Hooks last year and am pleased with them as well.

Hey Roost1...can you please define old timers. I think I'm older than you and am still a spry chicken in my mind. :tu:

I've only ever heard ONE bird kee-kee in the spring.. a jake. I've raised 15 or so poults to 6 months or older in the past couple years... they kee-kee nonstop when raised without a mother until around 4 months, then get much quieter.

I will probably only kee-kee a couple times during a season. I've never called a gobbler in with it, but I've killed several gobblers that were henned up following the hens to the kee-kee. If the hens won't come to other calls, I'll throw the kee-kee at them at a last resort. It usually doesn't work on calling in hens that are preoccupied with something else, but sometimes it does, and I've never spooked hens using it.

The other time it works well is using it like one would use it in the fall. If the flock with gobbler that I'm working gets split up by coyotes, bobcats, (or heaven forbid- movement by my kids :) ), I'll reposition, wait 30 minutes, then kee-kee. Usually the jennies come first, and I've had the gobbler come back in following the girls.

My backyard is pretty noisy with all the chickens clucking, roosters crowing and dogs barking.... but I noticed last summer when the poults I was raising in an enclosed coop 20 yards away from the main flock would kee-kee- the adult hens really perked up and paid attention, yet ignored all the other barnyard noises.

Whining is a great call to use... both soft and loud. I use that all the time. Real hens will whine as loud as heck when they are pissed off by something. My boss hen is the master of the whine, and she'll usually let that one out shortly before she puts the other girls back in their place, kinda like one of my cats hisses before she attacks me :)

there is no call that is off limits in my books. I have thrown everything I can at some birds that wont commit, sometimes it breaks that imaginary line and sometimes they just keep on going about their way (gobbling all the way as they get further and further lol). I will never limit myself to any specific call, tone or volume because you never know what will work tomorrow that didnt today.

having said all that, calling is the least of my concern in being sucessful....set up trumps it all. You have the right set up it calling wont matter.

IMO woodhaven are a shell of what they once made, so much so I dont even bother with them anymore. Price and changes in materials and quality have me moving on to others these days. ZERO chance im paying $15 for a dang mouth call. The red wasp use to be my fav call by far but over the past 3 years or so they have changed the tape on them and they just dont blow the same anymore. Lots of good makers out there for cheaper, heck Yukrut on here makes a real good one and he can hook you up with some for a real good price.

I'm still new to mouth calls so I really don't know what the difference is in the different reed cuts on the calls. Or like Woodhavens different colors in latex. That's why Ive acquired so many cause I don't know the difference so I'll buy one to try. It might work and it might not. A combo cut in one may not work in a different brand the same way. Thus meaning I would order some made from somebody but don't know what to ask for.

Post a pic of the calls you like or feel comfortable with, from there myself or a bunch of the others can easily steer you in the right direction

For me I blow standard white latex in a split V or half moon the best, no more then 3 reeds. Generally I can buy any call from a decent company with those specs and run it fine

.....but I do incorporate a whine in my soft calling.
VERY deadly if one can do it properly and control the air. One of my hunting buds is killer with his whine. He closes 95% of his turkeys (< 45 yards in the timber) with a soft whine, and has been doing so for as long as I have known him.

No doubt about it, and the most important message the OP can take away from this entire "calling" thread, especially if he is primarily a woods hunter.

Thanks, it looks like a split V 3 reed is the masjority of what you showed. The colored latex is much denser and takes a lot of air to blow usually. They are also generally pretty loud. I'd try Cane Creek Tuff Man, easy to blow with a wide range of tone and not too loud, Hook's split V 3 reed great call and easy to blow, and Legacy Leading Lady also super easy to run and a great range of tones.

Or stick with what you pictured if those are working for you

i 2nd the legacy leading lady, its a very solid call. David Halloran flatliner is also a good split V that you can get very soft on. it uses red and black tape but for some reason on it I have no issues getting very very low with the sound.

If you like Woodhaven. Try the ninja Series. They take the least about of air to make the call work like they should.

I can't use a split V of any kind lol can't even get a squeak. I've tried and tried.
The easiest cut for me is a 3 reed Cutter.

OK so I just ordered the Cane Creek tuff man, Hooks split v 3 and instead of the Legacy I decided to try Rens suggestion and try one of the Halloran calls. Got the flatliner instead of the others because I don't do good with a batwing cut . We'll see how they do. Thanks for the suggestions.

Kee kee is very deadly in the spring when used at the right time in the right situation.

Sorry figured I'd ask on here instead of calling you like normally since all your suggestions get me in a pickle with the wifey quite often. She ain't even met you yet but she's already cussed you a few times. "Baby Roost said its the best thing and I would be happy I had to try it out. You know one of these days Greg I'm gonna get you back.

I started to ask if you were married. Whatever you do, don't tell her what you have spent on those calls :D !

Don't order any more calls. You can make the ones you have work. Also, don't toss any of the ones that you didn't like first go around. As you get more comfortable with mouth calls, you may find that if you try them again, you will probably be better with them.

Also, don't be afraid to trim tape or bend frames slightly. Sometimes all it takes is a little better fit in your palate to seal and direct the air flow better which can make all the difference in the world.
