Well this bow hunting noob has been making some small purchases here and there and is afraid that sometime in the future he may be an addict...

The goal is to shoot accurately and consistently (duh) and have just enough gear to get the job done. As long as I can kill a deer it's good with me.

So I got a string loop, actually a 3-pack. And tied one onto my bowstring so I can use my release without worry of wearing down the bowstring.

Also I have 6 broadheads instead of 3... makes for some practice heads if I need em.

And a grand total of 3 arrows now! :D I know that is nothing compared to most of you, but it's better than only one or none. I got to watch what I spend at the moment but I need at least a few arrows to work with... Thanks to those who offered arrows, I really appreciate it. Seems 31" is a long draw length, but it also seems to be the length that works for me.

Now I got another noob question. How much should I practice with broadheads (after I am consistent with field points) and will they pass through and destroy my corn bag target? It's a 40lb corn bag stuffed with empty plastic mulch bags (the thick kind).

You didn't say but if your using a fixed blade broadhead you better start shooting them now as most wont hit in the same place as your field points, and you will need to re ajust your sights. And yes they will do a little more damage to your target.

When you get $110, let me know, I will sell you a blob target. Most shoot them for 10 years or so and you can shoot it with broadheads all you want. It comes with a one year warranty even if you shoot it with broadheads everyday. You can see the details at www.blobarcherytargets.com.

agree you need to shoot them now but dont agree "most" wont hit in the same place.

to be honest most will be close if not right one if your bow is tuned correctly. once you know they are hitting with the same POI as you field points you dont really need to shoot them anymore.

agreed with REN, once you have them hitting the same POI as your fieldpoints there is no need to shoot them anymore--unless you just want to "spot-check" throughout the season, or are feeling an undying need to dull broadheads and have the time to resharpen them.

Thanks for the advice.

Can I still shoot targets if the blades have gone dull, and save sharpening them for actual hunting?

The blob target sounds nice but definitely out of my budget for a while... maybe one day though if I do become an archery addict.

You remind me of me last year, we started out bout the same. It sounds like you have what you need to put a deer in the freezer. Yes definitely shoot your broadheads now, they will be off from your field points! And practice, practice , practice. Imo, you should be able to put all 3 of your arrows into a softball sized [email protected]. If you can do better great. And practice judging distance and shooting by mixing it up. Good luck!

Yes, the broadheads will go through your bag target and you will ruin your bag in short order. The cheapest route to go for a little practice with your broadheads is a styrafoam target. They don't last long with broadheads, but will work for a little practice. Walmart normally has some this time of year. I likely have one in my shed in Brentwood that has been shot but not totally shot out that you are welcome to if you will come by the house to pick it up.
