My last order was for some 19g/cc 9/9.5s (390-400/ounce).
Andy, this is correct that you ordered 9.5's?
If so, just genuinely curious at to why the 9.5's over the 9's?
No reason in particular, but did like the fact they were a little denser (
19g/cc), but not like that matters in the real world of turkey hunting. After a little more research and talking with the source, my latest order will run more closely to 9.25s (
0.078" diameter pellets), but they will be 19g/cc, so the number of pellets in each ounce of shot with be comparable to 18g/cc #9s. With that said, I have some 18g/cc true 9.5s (
420 pellets per ounce, 0.075" diameter pellets) that I got from Hal few years back. My intent at that point was to load some .410 shells, but I have not got around to it yet. See website below for pellet diameter size.
There are several of the TSS gurus/loaders/testers hunting with 9.5s now, or have hunted with them, and they claim no difference in killing ability based on their field experience. I am not talking about 20 yard shots, if you get what I am saying, without me saying it and promoting it. Based on their reports, the 9.5s will cleanly kill further than we should ever shoot. Some of the guys who have hunted with the 9.5s hunt very open areas like TX, KS, NE, etc, thus their average shot distance far exceeds what is typical for me and many of us who hunt TN landscape. #9s still dominate the market and are what the majority of TSS shooters are hunting with these days.
