Dunstan Chestnut Trees

I need to pull the rest of mine out of the fridge.
I have about 1/2 of the seeds i got are between 3" and 12" already, only about 24 of them and that's a lot to move around. I'm about to double that and make the wife mad that I'm taking up more room. Between the chestnut trees and garden plants I'm running out of windows to put stuff in LOL
I'm single so I can move the furniture and put them all in front of that sliding glass door. LOL. They get about 6 hours of sunlight there. Usually they stay there for the month of March. I did pull them out earlier than usual so this year they will be there for 6 weeks or so. When they get 6 or 8 inches tall I turn the trays once a week cause the seedlings lean towards the sunlight. Good luck to you.

As you can see in the picture I have 20 pots in each tray. The tray is open on the bottom and sits in a bus tub. When I pot the seeds I use that pre moistened baccto potting soil. It is so moist it makes that radical take off. To water I just use a plastic watering can, with the spray end off. I put an inch of water in each tub on the end. I don't water directly on the seed. When I see the water level get to bottom of tub I put another inch in. I'd say right now the inch of water last 3 or 4 days.
Awesome. I need to order some Baccto online. As previously mentioned, nowhere around here carries it.

@mcbuck58 - I looked at 3 chestnuts from the fridge today today. 1 didn't have a radical, 1 was about 1/4", and one was about 7/8". Baccto gets here tomorrow night, so will be potting Friday. I guess I'll leave the ones that haven't started a radical yet in there and give them another couple weeks to see what they do

I always pull them all out at the same time. What I find is ones with radicals of different lengths, some starting to crack and some they look just like the day I put them in. This year just like past years I have some that had not started to crack open. I find the ones not cracked will start to crack within 2 or 3 days of being potted. Some seeds will not be viable so they mold or just do nothing. Why you have different lengths of radicals is some cracked a month or two ago. Some cracked two weeks ago. Some are now just starting to crack open.
Good luck.

Good info. Will update once potted. Thank you, sir!

I put the chestnuts the TN Landowner sent me in pots a couple weeks ago. Had them stratifying in the fridge all winter. Did have them in vermiculite and potting soil for the last month or so before potting them. No sprouts yet.

My late drop trees are supposed to be here today, guess I need to figure out exactly where I am planting them. I know where I am planting the persimmons, not sure yet on the chestnuts.

Your welcome. Looking forward to your update
I have 20 with radicals and 27 that don't have any radicals. Some of them looked to have cracked though. Got them potted and watered 1" full. Leaving today and will check when I get back Sunday to see if any new radicals popped.

No sprouts? You mean no tree growing up. Did they have any radicals. Good luck with your late drop trees.

If they cracked, they will probably send out a radical. I've pulled seeds out of cold stratification before with no radical or even cracked. Few days in pot they cracked and couple days later sent out a radical. Good luck

No radicals, yet. I pretty well did the same with them that I did with the walnuts I planted last year.

The late drop trees don't look so good, but we'll see. Planting them tomorrow.

Plant them! I bet most will grow. I ordered a pound from the same place you did and 48 out 50 have come up.

I had a couple of Dunstan Chestnuts "abused" by a couple of young bucks this winter, completely tore off the tree tubes and rubbed the bark although not too deep. Yesterday I replaced the tubes. One of the trees is around 5' tall but the top 2' has snapped off, do you think it will be ok?

Yes it will bud and sprout. See if there is a bud below where it was tore off. Make a clean angled cut just above the bud. If you don't have a bud make a clean angled cut just below the damaged trunk. Then watch for a bud to start forming. If the bud is not by the cut you will need to cut it again just above the bud. Hope this makes sense.
I use Plantra 5' tubes. I don't let my trees branch unless they are above the tubes. This keeps the branches out of a deer's reach for the most part. Never had a buck tear up one of my tubes. I leave tubes on for 4 or five years then go to cages. My cages are 4' tall but still do not let tree branch below 5'.
