As a tactic, I don't seen this being that much different than stalking field birds, hunting from a blind, using decoys, or just shooting a turkey stumbled upon. I'll refrain from criticizing the tactic regarding anything to do with hunting ethics, but do believe this particular tactic greatly increases the hunter's odds of being shot by another hunter.

While I prefer to call up a bird, again, I will not criticize the ethics of this tactic.
However, as we shooters become more effective at shooting turkeys, tactics such as this strengthen the case for a reduced bag limit?

Related, it may be that our increasing effectiveness at killing turkeys is progressively reducing the gobbler:hen ratio, and contributing to gobblers being less vocal and harder to call in, in the more traditional style of turkey hunting? Think about it. Before pop-up blinds, long-range turkey chokes, longer-range heavier-than-lead loads, robo decoys, it did take a very different and steeper learning curve to become an effective turkey hunter?

Again, I don't see this tactic as being any more unethical than stalking field birds in some other manner (and am not implying either to be unethical). Just pointing out that today's turkey hunters are much more effective turkey killers than they were a decade or two ago, and they can become effective killers in but a fraction the time spent afield compared to those who began their turkey hunting back in the 90's and earlier.

Zack, congratulations on your turkey kill. If you're happy, I'm happy for you.

It is no different than using a man-made turkey call to lure one in. I don't see what the big fuss is about. A call, decoy, fan, blind or any other tool is an advantage. I have trouble understanding why one is classified as worse than the others.

Re: Fanning a gobbler(short clip)

If you understand the differences then you don't understand turkey hunting. There's no comparison to calling a bird in with nothing but camo and a shotgun and hunting with the aid of decoys, blinds, fans etc. end of discussion

there is one comparison, they are both legal means of outwitting and killing your prey.

So you only use the sounds your natural voice can make to call one in? I may not understand turkey hunting, but myself and friends have put 7 big birds on the ground this year. Everyone of them has been a blast. That's all I need to understand about turkey hunting. The discussion doesn't end just because you say so. You are a little outnumbered with your opinions.

The only opinion that matters to me is mine and the people I hunt with.

Congrats on killing 7 with your buddies, that's a decent season. But do you really want to have a pissing match on turkey killing with me?

Your perspective of turkey hunting is like liberal politics to me, I don't support it and basically don't acknowledge those beliefs as being the same as mine.

Other then the dead bird, there's nothing similar about traditional hunting versus the new generation style. If you don't understand the differences between the two, then you don't understand turkey hunting at its core.

Save the Indian bs, same culture that sold off everything they had for beads and whiskey. Save the goal is to kill bs also, sure it is but for some there's more to it then just pulling the trigger

Re: Fanning a gobbler(short clip)

Zach I can't see the video on my phone so I'll watch it later. If you feel safe and sure that nobody else could be around to shoot at you, then have at it. In fact, I carried a fan this morning around some big open fields, but I couldn't find the boss tom I was looking for. I guess he been shot at too many times now.

setterman if your opinion and your buddies opinions only matter to you, then your opinion doesn't matter to me. (Or most of us here, I'm guessing).

Fleet fox was not starting a pissing match, he was pointing out that of the 7 birds killed on his place, everyone had a blast killing them. And that's what turkey hunting is about to me. If I get the shakes, I'm doing it right.

Don't even compare turkey hunting to politics, that's comparing apples to....rotten bananas.

Re: Fanning a gobbler(short clip)

Awesome kill Zach!!!! Don't even acknowledge the bashers. They're just jealous and are probably too fat and lazy to crawl or stalk.... Lol

Re: Fanning a gobbler(short clip)

Congrats on your kill Zach. If you're happy I am happy for you. I can't see myself trying in the future, not that anything is wrong with it perfectly legal. I would just prefer to call one to me gobbling and strutting. I've never killed one that I've walked up on or attempted to crawl on just my Personal preferences.
Congrats to you again.
If that 2nd Tom was 2 steps more to the right you would've doubled on your own [emoji16][emoji6]

You got me I'm disgustingly obese, somehow though I manage to grouse and turkey hunt in some of the most rugged terrain in this state day after day. And jealous? Not even remotely, try not being so surprised that not everyone agrees with every single way every Hunter has success. That's part of life

Re: Fanning a gobbler(short clip)

Congrats Zach! I see no difference what you did as someone stalking a deer or any other animal. Not real sure why setterman is so against it but I guess everyone has there own style of hunting. He probably voted for the 2 buck limit too![emoji12] [emoji12]

Funny you should mention drones. I was sitting on a mountain side one morning this week laughing with a buddy how easy this might be if when the leaves were down we could just fly drones over the mountain to find which area theyre strutting in and ease into the perfect calling position. If legal I wouldn't use it, but it is funny to me that others are thinking the same thing.

I'm sure though a bunch of hunters would arm their drones, and use them as mini gun turrets just too make it that much easier. :D

Before drones existed I was dreaming about using a hot air ballon to find them. :)

Re: Fanning a gobbler(short clip)

Man that's awesome. I'm gonna have to do that one day when I can find some field birds to mess with again.

Re: Fanning a gobbler(short clip)

Setterman the OPs thread title said fanning, so why did you even open his thread??? You just want to start a fight with everyone that doesn't do things the you like. Get over yourself.
