• Help Support TNDeer:

Have to vent

I've offered to help hunters with their shooting technique and made some suggestions for their ammo and equipment but I'd say they aren't really interested in making any changes to whatever they are doing. I try to do it in such a way as to not judge but just trying to be helpful. I know it's just part of hunting but I cringe every time that's the excuse when we can all get better if we want.

I'm an average deer hunter and average shooter but I'm pretty good at decision making on taking shots and placement now. I spent exactly two sleepless nights tore up about losing a deer and that was enough for me. It's a terrible feeling. Found the one with a rifle and never found a monster shot with a bow . Accidents can happen but wounding an animal can be minimized if you sight in your weapon , practice with your bow , and don't take crazy shots. I think we owe it to whatever we're hunting.

I'm sure most of us have been through it. And that is why I'm so precise about my shot placement and technique. Never want to experience that feeling (lost deer) again.

That's how it's supposed to feel and the way you grew from it is the right response to the experience. Stuff happens to all of us at some point. It's how we go forward that matters.

In this case the bonehead did it, didn't follow up, then went & did it again, and didn't follow up. Mega forfeited half of his buck privileges for the season to do the right thing while the jackass neighbor is still hunting. He effectively removed two adult bucks from the local herd without using a single tag. Blood boiling IMO.

This upsets me. Took a walk this morning and came across this.

I have a buddy who will remain nameless. He's a good guy, but he's not a good shot and despite having killed a number of deer, still gets buck fever so bad he can't help but shoot at anything with horns. I have several deer on my wall that were wounded by him that I killed later in the season.

Anyhow, I kinda called him out on it a few years ago and he challenged me to a shooting match for "pink slips" of our guns. His pride just couldn't take it.

Other than the fact that I didn't want his rifle, I don't know why I didn't take him up on it. I should have said ok, but when you lose, I don't want your gun. I just want you to agree to let me help you improve your shooting.

It all comes down to the personality of the shooter. Some people truly admire, respect, and even revere the animals they hunt. Others only look at the animals as targets to shoot at and have no respect for the animals whatsoever.

Sadly, I know a bunch of the later. Their anticipation for hunting season is to finally have "stuff to shoot at." Ummm, can I suggest hanging out at the gun range instead of the deer woods? Just a thought...

This post gets my blood boiling as well. I agree 100% with BSK, this is all about respect....for the deer, the hunt, and yourself. I love hunting but I'll straight up tell you I don't enjoy killing. Yes, it's necessary and I do it. But when I kill a deer I do my part to ensure that it dies as quickly and humanely as possible.

I come at it from a farming point of view. Deer or other big game don't hold a level of prestigious honor above a cow or pig to me. I don't get excited or an adrenaline rush from killing one. I don't think any more about it than I do taking a fillet knife down the backbone of a crappie or walleye. Killing it is necessary to go from something living to table fare to eat. With cows, hogs, chickens, etc, as a farmer you often grow them from birth and feed/water them every day and interact with them. But there comes a time when you gotta do what you gotta do for their intended purpose. I don't enjoy the killing but it doesn't bother me either. It's just the necessary part of it. But...I also can't stand for people who intentionally let things go to waste. Whether it's a deer or whatever. I get just as tore up when I come to a boat ramp or river bank and see crappie that people caught, kept in a cooler or live well til they died...and then decided they didn't want them and just dump them out at the ramp. What a waste.
