Its really simple will you shoot a jake? Yes or no... The reason I ask is because the state I live in Arkansas, just passed a law that it is against the law to take jakes. My answer is no, unless i am hunting with a kid or with someone who is new to turkey hunting. I wanna hear what yall have to say...

A turkey is a turkey.

Same as a spike is a deer.

Kill'em if you want to...shoot'em from a tree if you choose.

If you have a license...use it how "you" want to, regardless of what others think.

Well, I have only killed one long beard. I never hunted turkey until a few years ago. With that being said, I went to LBL last year by myself. I figured I would learn by trial and error. I roosted some birds the evening before the opening day. Went in early the next morning and got settled in real close. I heard the birds pitch down, so I hit the slate call a few times. Birds were gobbling before I even finished. Within a few minutes here they came. 3 jakes. One was larger (super jake) gobbling just like a long beard. Came to within 25 yards and I decided to let them walk. If I had it to do over again, I would have smoked the big one. I roosted them, called them in and should have killed one. So my answer is YES, I will kill a jake. I don't have enough under my belt yet.

I'm in just about the same boat. I've killed 4 now 2 jakes and 2 longbeards, but if a thunderjake comes in gobbling like a big boy I'm gonna treat him like one.... ;) :D

Last year was my first year and I killed 3 long beards and 1 jake!

I am a food hunter first so jake gets it!

not me but thats just how i hunt. However as long as it is not on the properties i hunt and i am out for meat I would shoot one if the person i am with dont have issues with me doing it on his property. Havent shot one in 8 years though.

Jake was my 1st bird and if I can help it I don't shoot em, it cost me a 2 year old last year I took my buddies son hunting with me and we stalked down to this field where we was certain a male bird was in it. Finally I see him walking and Seth says kill him I respond with a "I DOnt know if its a jake or not" then he said I'll kill him if he is a jake so I let him shoot and it was a 2 year old longbeard :D

i will not but i love to watch others shoot them if it makes them happy im happy, far as not shooting one to help the population a male is a male, if its a jake or a longbeard it is still taking a male out of the population
