If i could have gottten the decoys out before they flew down that morning I would have and I have no doubt that my boy would have gotten the opportunity sooner. But if you think that i need to earn your respect because I don't only sit all day and call and be patient I invite you to Greene Co. to hunt with me. Maybe, we can even use a decoy or for good grief sit in a blind together, well, you can sit in the blind and I will do the fanning for you..
[/quote] setter I think my hunting style has come to be a lot like yours, but I don't look down on those who use dekes or a blind because that's just a different style of hunting, it's legal and it's not an unfair advantage. I would like to kill one over decoys just to knock it off the list, but I haven't brought myself to even buy a decoy yet.Setterman":n8ymq22u said:highridge said:Just sitting and calling doesn't make anyone the better turkey hunter. I am starting to believe you might have a very different perspective on turkey hunting. I never sit and call unless I've got a vocal bird. I also, generally refrain from running all over creation calling and hunt by sitting and waiting for a bird to vocalize on his own before making my move. What you're talking about is entirely different than anything I do in the woods.
What happened to you on Yuchi is part of public land hunting. All I hunt is public land here and get hosed quite often, but understand that's part of the game. There's lots of things you could do to potentially speed up a hunt, I don't even own decoys so I wouldn't have taken that approach
Beat my chest? Grow up son and get that chip off your shoulder. Or work on your reading comprehension. If he's not a turkey hunter he wouldn't understand. Just like I don't fish for trash fish so I wouldn't understand catching a carp and being proud of it. It's all about perspective.catman529":14z7yjko said:spur why do you need to beat your chest like thatSpurhunter":14z7yjko said:Aquaholic":14z7yjko said:Im not a Turkey Hunter....

For example, I had my young son at Yuchi this past weekend and we had set up on 2 mature birds early that morning, they gobbled and strutted around 15 or 20 hens, we watched these birds for about 3 1/2 hours, I tried to be a little aggressive with my calling and I also just reminded them that we were still waiting if they felt the need to come up to us, after about the 3 1/2 hour mark one decided he wanted what was on that hill above him and he broke from the hens and was heading our way. From another ridge over we heard the classic runner approach of some, yelp, yelp, yelp...crunch, crunch, crunch. Everytime the bird would gobble you could tell the runner was getting closer. I was hoping the bird would get to us before they ruined everyone's hunt but he didn't, the runner and his son popped up over the ridge between us and the bird and he seen them and that was the end of that. Now, that runner for sure cost my son his very first opportunity at a very good bird and I understand we were on public land and that happens but all he could say was..Well, I guess we will go look for some more birds to try and get in front of...Just sitting and calling doesn't make anyone the better turkey hunter. He is 6 y/o by the way and I regret now not letting him shoot one of those hens and I already know how you feel about shooting hens spur

Big or small, kill em all
Setterman":5lmt3849 said:I would hope you wouldn't let him shoot a hen, considering they have to be bearded to be harvested. Hens should never be killed, even if bearded. They are not a trophy, and it only hurts the population, there is literally zero benefits to killing hens at any point in time IMO.
Yes, I will judge a person who hunts a particular way even if legal, if I don't agree with their methods. Sorry, but that's my God given right. I make no bones about how I feel on these topics.
If rifles were legal would every one be okay with that?
How about other things in society that are legal? You agree with those? Abortion, Gays, etc? I sure as heck don't, I'm not going to suddenly shelf my beliefs because it's hunting rather than social or political issues. I guess I should be like the rest of you all and think it's fine to kill babies, sleep with other dudes, smoke weed, etc because it's legal. Sorry, but I'm just not that liberal a person.
Every season that passes the more hunters slip further and further into a hole that bears no resemblance to traditional hunting. A quick breeze through a magazine or hunting show is nothing but a highlight reel of everything that is wrong with the direction of this sport.
highridge":1e3sx90o said:I'm still puzzled though why grown men are so quick to judge other hunters just because they don't hunt the way you all do.

The deer and turkeys were eliminated by the white man and market hunting.Jcalder":b84oy0ki said:I bet the first hunters used any method they could to kill an animal. Probably why deer where nearly extinct and turkeys are finally getting a decent population. But I agree high ridge. If you don't hunt the way they do you're wrong. I'm ok with that.
Now where am I gonna setup my blind and dekes to kill that bearded hen.
Big or small, kill em all
