I've only been really into turkey hunting 5 years. Have only killed 5 birds. I know that's less than some of you guys kill in one year so I'm not saying I'm good at it at all because I'm not. But 4 of 5 kills have been within 10 yards and 1 was about 20 yards. That's what got me hooked was my first one flying down at less than 10 yards gobbling it's pecker off and having to wait about 10 minutes hoping the other LB would come into range so my buddy and I could double. It never happened and I was able to kill it at 7 yards. The ones me and a kid doubled on last week came to 10 yards exactly when we doubled. That's what keeps me going back is the times I get them in my face and the gobbling rattling my chest because they're so close. I have shot my gun at 60 yards and feel confident I could kill one but just doesn't seem like it'd be as much fun. Kind of like deer hunting too, I'd much rather have them under 50 yards then to take a 300 or 400 yard shot.

There's zero thrill in sniping turkeys. These turkey posers don't care about the thrill of getting one close. They don't care about playing the game. They don't care about duping a bird. They don't care about being challenged.

They only care about that Facebook post. They only care about punching a tag.

It's just another symptom of the disease that's infecting this sport. From decoys, blinds, long range sniping, reaping, bushwhacking, the list goes on forever and it's pretty pathetic where this sport is headed.

In my teen years and after.....Archery season was an AMAZING time in the woods. There were not many hunters in the woods. The deer were not spooked. It was real hunting mano e mano. And if you did see another hunter in the woods He (it was a he almost always) gave you a huge wide berth, motioned you own through and was a true gentleman, respectful and kind.

Now Archery season puts at least as many Bumbling Stompers in the forest as Muzzle loader season does, if not more. These days, top cross bows are easily as accurate as average, to good scoped rifles at 100 yards: 1 moa.

Gone is the treasured time in the woods with deer and the occasional wilderness gentleman here and there.

But this is exactly what TWRA wanted....more money. Oh, I mean to sell more license and stamps.

I'm not saying we should stop, stunt or hinder technology.... But these days with the latest, greatest, heaviest of the heavy shot, guys are killing turkeys grave yard dead at 100 yards with 12 gauges and 80+ yards with 20 gauges. I've witnessed it. And it's TWRA allowing this.

Folks better pray I'm never head of the TWRA. Because if I was:

1. Archery season tackle is limited to a bow, with no sights. Drawn and held by the hand, ie. No Cross Bows, no releases except for the truly disabled.

2. Muzzle loader season: No firearms with technology newer than the match lock, which precedes flintlock technology. Yep, you have to slip through he woods blowing on the "match" (burning wick) to keep it from going out so your gun is ready to fire when you need it. The truly handicapped can use Flinlocks. The Bumbling Stompers can have modern gun season as per normal.

Turkey season: Lead shot only, nothing bigger than #5 shot, no shotshells permitted longer than 3", no 10 ga.

That should get rid of the bumbling stompers who are looking to kill for glory and bragging rights.

I wouldn't go THIS far, but it's going the right direction IMO, instead of continuing to make it easier and easier to kill game, make it harder.
 
Its strange.... when I'm deer hunting it's just shooting them. No matter whether it's with a bow at 30 yards or with a rifle at 500 yards. Just shooting.

Totally different with turkeys. Maybe it's because they are coming to me instead of ambushing them like deer, but I want them in that magical 20-30yd range. (I don't like them at 10y or less... I'll usually miss completely).

I set myself up for failure 2 years ago. I heard some birds all morning in a neighbors field and about 9:30 could tell they worked their way back into my woods. I circled around to a field on the front of my property and stopped and hit my slate call. They hammered less than 100 yards. I snuck through some tall grass and was kind of downhill looking up at the edge of the woods. They gobbled again and I couldn't move and knew as soon as they come out of the woods they'd be right there. As luck would have it they stepped out about 10 yards and I pulled and missed. That sucked :).. Thinking back I think of 10 different things I should've done but at the time I froze because I felt they were so close before I seen them and didn't need to move much.
 
76 yards. Smh. Here I sit without a kill because my limit is 50 and they seem to be hanging up at 60 every single hunt. I bet I've done more testing, shooting better optics, and have done more work to my gun than any of these sniping fools.

I want them more like 15yds. If possible. I want to hit one in the head with the barrel on my shotgun.
I just couldn't imagine shooting one at 100 yds would be tough?

A real marksman actually kills with the wad. Any dolt can kill one with the shot, the wad is where the challenge lies

In Kansas, they have an archery only season the first week. Let me tell you it is HARD to get one close enough to crank off a shot with a bow or even a crossbow. The wind and lack of cover is the major factor. In this video I did use a decoy, but I was concealed by a cotton wood log and my leafy suit.
