After reading the post in the twra section I wanted to comment.. but I know that section is not for opinions or suggestions.. but.. would you or have you ever shot a gobbler out of a tree?? I'll tell you.. when I turkey hunt.. if "its brown its down".. I'm in the meat hunting stage.. I'd shoot one in a tree in the drop of a hat.. My opportunities to kill one are few and far in between..

Never, period.

There's not enough meat to warrant me ever sniping one out of a tree. IMO turkey hunting is a challenge of fooling a bird into thinking my calling is a willing hen and getting him to come to me.

I don't do this to just kill a critter, guess I've matured beyond that stage.

I have more respect for the hunter who sneaks up on a bird in a field or woods and bushwhacks it then I do a roost shooter.

In fact I have no respect for a roost shooter. Sorry, but I'm a traditionalist who believes in the hunt more than the kill

I agree I'm not into roost shooting but a limb hopper will get it.

I've seen birds hop from tree to tree even during midday and they aren't the same to me

That's different and they're fair game. I was referring to the other.

I won't be pc on this subject :)

Yes and yes.

Im turkey hunting, the end. The object for me is to kill the turkey.

I'd prefer not to because it's not as fun, but I have done it and have nothing against doing it. It's all the sane in the end, the bird gets lead to the head and is cooked up for dinner.

Hahah this is always a HOT topic.

Personally I won't and I think it's silly but my way if hunting isn't everyone's. I don't really see the thrill in it and it's not very hard to get under one once the leaves come in and it's dark especially on days the grounds wet

Mine as well, however it's one of a handful of game species that can be pursued by matching wits.

I understand though that not everyone is capable of setting up properly, calling well, and understanding turkeys to the point they can kill them traditionally.

The new era of hunter is upon us, and it's a kill at all cost mentality I just can't agree with.

No it's not, and please for my sanities sake don't even try and convince me they're the same

I'm leaving this conversation as I'm going to go rogue and say something which I shouldn't.

Do whatever makes y'all happy.......

Well go rouge, your talking about a bird with a very small brain. Right?

Im very capable of killing one with a call, on a field after not hearing anything, belly crawling on them, or out of a tree. If you don't like it that's fine, but its not a absolute wrong thing to do.
I personally enjoy the head crushing trigger pull and the sound and smell of my shotgun going off as much as calling one in.

Ah ole Setterman is bonafide, in his own mind anyways, so his way is the only way. If you want to clean ones clock while he is still on the limb then hammer down.

Sorry boys, but we will just have to disagree on this one.

I've killed one bird in 13-14 years of hunting them. Done everything like I should have and killed a jake. If I happen to slip under one he's coming out. I wouldn't make it my goal to do it but I don't mind going home early.

I have in the past, not going to lie. But, once you get some under your belt you will regret doing that.

I shot one that hopped a tree around 0900 in the morning. me and this bird had played cat and mouse for about 3 straight days and everytime I would get on him, he would hop trees and gobble looking for me. he would roost in the bottom a of goat face ridge. If I went down he would bust me, so I stayed up top and finally got tired of his tree hopping.

I told myself that morning that if that sob hops trees I am going to roll him out, well he did; and I held true to what I set out to do. He was a good bird and he shouldn't have been killed that way.

But, long story short. To each their own; but I wont do it again..
