Dang, I only can wish that I was the true sportsman and superior hunter of some people here. It sucks being scum at the bottom of the barrel. It sucks that I'm just sitting here in the woods, trying to kill a turkey. Might as well just find a nest and stomp on the eggs, because I am not matured into a true sportsman. Holy crap one just gobbles close! BRB

I joined this site because I thought you could give your thoughts and not be belittled over it . Its legal get over it its gonna happen and talking down to someone for doing it is just kinda unethical in my book your way might be rite in your book but might not be for me same goes for my way . If it was killed legally congrats if not you deserve the ridicule you will get. CATMAN FER PRESIDENT of the first ever roost shooters chapter I want to be second in command:-D

There have been many times thru the years when it has been tempting to shoot one out of the tree before they fly down but I have not done it yet. Deep inside me something just did not seem right about shooting one out of the tree. With that said if it was a case of survival I would should one out of a tree. But only in case of survival. I am not saying you are wrong to shoot one out of a tree but for me I will have to hold off and let them roost in peace.

Catman, do a video of shooting a Jake from roost after you stomp the eggs, that should really put you in that barrel you speak of. :)

My gosh this topic again...And I have never agreed with Setterman more.

I am anti-roost shooting, anti-wing shooting, anti-blind sitting, and anti-decoy using. I don't care what each of you do, just don't come bothering me with it. There is a new age of turkey hunters, that the kill is all that matters to them. Yes, killing a turkey may be the goal, but the game that you play with the wild bird is part of it. If everyone would just understand this I firmly believe they would get much more fulfillment and enjoyment out of their hunt.

I once was a young hunter that I would shoot a gobbler anyway I could. But then I matured and became a true sportsmen. Wild turkeys are dang tough animals to kill, but they have some weak spots. I don't care what no one says, it aint that hard to sneak up to one under the tree, especially when the leaves get on the trees.

I had a guy on opening day ruin me just for this crap. He came up the hollow I was set up in. I heard birds flying off everywhere and he started shooting them like quail. You talking about getting under your skin. It was before legal shooting light. Also, there was no way he could tell hens from gobblers by the way he was shooting at them. After he shot at them flying off, he started to call again, haha.

I do not see what the fun is sitting in a blind with a decoy and waiting for a turkey to come to you. People act like it is a mix of deer and duck hunting, sit somewhere where the animals frequent, and try to call them up. It is about hearing one gobble, and moving in on it, trying to get in position to call him up. Turkey hunting is not about sitting there waiting for them to come to you. That is deer hunting.

I can see the blind users point though. If you hunt in the midwest where there is more fields than woods, you may need blind and decoys to kill anything. I believe that blinds are also good to get kids a taste of hunting in general. Blinds/decoys also good for the handicapped. But, I didn't grow up with blinds and decoys, and started tagging along with dad when I was about 8-9 years old. I learned how to hunt them the old school way, and my dad my have taken a few lumps and bumps by having a kid slow him down, but he taught me the right way.

Now turkey hunting is the only kind of hunting a truly love and enjoy. I don't even know why I deer hunt, I guess just to be out there.

I say every man has an opinion and yours is your own however your facts of past turkey hunting is askew. I have turkey books from many writers and what you think is turkey hunting back in the day just isn't so. Many used dogs to run into a flock to bust them up. No dog then you have to run and fire a shot to scatter them yourself. Then they would construct a blind to hide since they did not have camo. A wingbone yelper made from the bones in the wing of a previously killed turkey was used to bring the flock back to you and they killed what ever bird came back. Yes the mature tom was prized but a nice jake or a hen was welcome too.
This way of hunting was too effective and the turkey population was reduced to the point many areas had no turkeys. New regulations were required and that is what brought on the spring season.
As calls were perfected and produced for sale turkey hunting morphed into more what you are thinking turkey hunting is. So do you actually want to be correct or do you just want it to be your way?

It was like that one day. And in one of my previous post I stated that they almost went extinct. I also said that Tom Kellys and the Ben Lees of the world are the ones who developed turkey hunting into the popular sport that it is today. It looks to be developing into a sport where the kill is all that matters, no matter how you do it. I think this way because everything is and everybody is resorting to the blind over decoys method. There isn't much "hunting" when you do it like that. It is like deer "hunting" and they are more so "hunting" you than you going after a gobbling bird.

Have it your way, I don't care what any body else does as long as they don't come flauting it in my face.

BTW, I am way off topic, roost shooting doesn't even bother me like blinds and decoys do. Those are my two main issues.

My ultimate goal just became setting my blind and decoys out and shooting one off the limb. Not because I want to. Because it's LEGAL. No wonder hunters have such a bad name. Some day I hope to be one of the elites like some of you think you are.

You want to talk about ethics? There is absolutely nothing ethical about shooting a roosted bird. Do you realize how poor their ability to see in the dark is and their asleep. Please explain the ethicality of roost shooting. This should be rich....

It seems the new generation of turkey killers (not hunters) with the kill at any cost mentality hide behind the if it's legal I'm okay with it stuff. Over and over this reasoning is thrown out here as if it makes it okay.

When is enough, enough?

Sheesh, I cannot believe how dramatically the turkey hunting community has changed in the last few years and none of it for the betterment of the sport.

Will not hurt my feelings what you do, I suppose you will be quite unsuccessful in killing turkeys by doing so...

Guess my blind and decoys will hurt my success rate.

Had one opening morning 30 yds on a limb. No, don't care about killing him that way, but I can understand how some might want to. I guess to each his own. I just like the sport of calling him in. I would think that this would be more attractive to some one who is new to turkey hunting, with few kills under his belt, not a more experienced turkey hunter.

Where's the ethics in using a fancy modern shotgun? Where's the ethics in using a modern call produced today? I think you should call them up with a leaf and beat them to death with a stick. That sounds more ethical to me than shooting them with a modern shotgun with a supertight choke and shells that pattern like a slug gun inside 30 yards.

So where does it end?

I enjoy the deer season debates as well. The recurve hunters say the compound hunters are sissys. The compound hunters say the crossbow hunters are jerks. Let the individual decide how he wants to hunt. If you don't agree with it, then do it your way and leave him alone. Beating your chest and talking about how much better you are only makes you come off as an elitist prick.

The law sets the guidelines for hunting whatever species.

Hunt how you want within the law and all is good in the eyes of the law.

Ethics can/will vary from person to person. We each enjoy the woods in different ways in hopes of reaching a goal. Whether that path to the goal is ehtical or not depends on the perspective of the hunter. Legal is legal, ethics are opinions/ideas between people.

Straight up a steep hill or circling around at a gradual incline, either way will eventually lead to the top.

I'm affraid this thread has run its course....
