Shooting one out of a tree??

My gosh this topic again...And I have never agreed with Setterman more.

I am anti-roost shooting, anti-wing shooting, anti-blind sitting, and anti-decoy using. I don't care what each of you do, just don't come bothering me with it. There is a new age of turkey hunters, that the kill is all that matters to them. Yes, killing a turkey may be the goal, but the game that you play with the wild bird is part of it. If everyone would just understand this I firmly believe they would get much more fulfillment and enjoyment out of their hunt.

I once was a young hunter that I would shoot a gobbler anyway I could. But then I matured and became a true sportsmen. Wild turkeys are dang tough animals to kill, but they have some weak spots. I don't care what no one says, it aint that hard to sneak up to one under the tree, especially when the leaves get on the trees.

I had a guy on opening day ruin me just for this crap. He came up the hollow I was set up in. I heard birds flying off everywhere and he started shooting them like quail. You talking about getting under your skin. It was before legal shooting light. Also, there was no way he could tell hens from gobblers by the way he was shooting at them. After he shot at them flying off, he started to call again, haha.

I do not see what the fun is sitting in a blind with a decoy and waiting for a turkey to come to you. People act like it is a mix of deer and duck hunting, sit somewhere where the animals frequent, and try to call them up. It is about hearing one gobble, and moving in on it, trying to get in position to call him up. Turkey hunting is not about sitting there waiting for them to come to you. That is deer hunting.

I can see the blind users point though. If you hunt in the midwest where there is more fields than woods, you may need blind and decoys to kill anything. I believe that blinds are also good to get kids a taste of hunting in general. Blinds/decoys also good for the handicapped. But, I didn't grow up with blinds and decoys, and started tagging along with dad when I was about 8-9 years old. I learned how to hunt them the old school way, and my dad my have taken a few lumps and bumps by having a kid slow him down, but he taught me the right way.

Now turkey hunting is the only kind of hunting a truly love and enjoy. I don't even know why I deer hunt, I guess just to be out there.

I believe I have said this hundreds of times, but it is TV hunting shows ruining it. The new age hunters, or the gullible hunters see the MAD and Bonecollector TV shows, and see them hunting out of a blind with their decoys and brand new bows, so that is what they do.

Just like the counrty is getting away from God, Turkey hunting is getting away from what it was founded on as well.

So many things to reply to in this thread but Ill start here. Your WAY off. Turkey hunting started with Native Americans shooting them year-round and by any tactic that fed their family, hen, jake, gobbler and all.

Anyone judging other people hunting enjoyment as less holy than their perceived method is just rude.

Not wrong. Native Americans hunted for food to survive, as well as the Puritans and Pilgrims that moved over here. Entire different way of hunting. The market hunters also nearly made them along with whitetail deer and other game go extinct. Read some history of hunting. We are now sport hunters. I would think most of you on this site do not hunt for meat only because you have to have the meat from a deer/turkey to survive. I am not saying that you do not choose to. Some people substitute beef with venison. That is fine. Unless you have a health problem, there is not many people that rely soley on hunting to feed themselves.

I am not being rude. I also said that I do not like hunting in these new methods, but if you do, just don't come bother me with it. People have bothered me with it so I will bother back.

You guys should report straight to the turkey gods for your sainthood status and receive your halo and angel wings .

What's it like being so morally superior to the bottomdwellers of turkey hunting?

Turkey hunting was made popular by people like Tom Kelly, Ben Rogers Lee, Richard Kirby, and some of them old school turkey hunters. That is when the NWTF came together, and started to work on getting the population back up. None of these guys hunted in dang blinds over decoys. That is what I used to refer to as the modern day of turkey hunting, when the states started opening up spring turkey seasons instead of just fall seasons or no season at all.

Now, this is the old school way, and the new modern way is taking over. I just despise it. Do not give 2 cents what you think of me or my ways.

Maybe I just don't go around feeling like I am morally better than other people because they choose to kill a turkey in a legal manner that is different from how I hunt.

I'm not going to belittle a man for his hunting methods as long as they are within the parameters of the law. Maybe you guys should try not being so snotty and get off your high horse.

That's what's awesome.

So... what I'm gathering from this thread is that the best thing to shoot em off the limb with is a 3-1/2" 10Ga with a XXX full choke? (from a blind, with some decoys) :D

Someone needs to post the "Ron Burgandy" Anchorman, "That escalated quickly!"

I was one of the reasons it escalated. I'm out before I get in trouble...

Wow. I honestly had no idea that this many people would roost shoot a turkey, and especially didn't know they would admit it in the open. I wasn't naive enough to believe that it didn't happen on occasion, but I though roost shooters would have the decency to lie about it. I have had numerous opportunities to shoot them off the roost and it never even occurred to me to do it. It would take away everything that is awesome and everything that makes turkey hunting so deeply satisfying and addicting and turns it into squirrel hunting in the early morning darkness. This thread makes me sad.

My very first longbeard was killed from a tree, it was around 11am and he had snuck in behind me and hopped on a limb about 5ft from the ground and appeared as if he was going to take a nap, he had nestled his head down and got comfy. I clucked and he popped his head up and I took it off. I don't feel bad about that either.

I have busted a flock up in the fall and shot at one that landed above me in a tree and that one I wish I could take back. But I have never shot one from its morning roost. I don't agree with it but some people do and that's fine. I enjoy the hunting aspect and challenge too much.

This is the dirty on the deal. I have never I repeat never, shot one from the tree. I enjoy setting up on one just as much as the rest of you. BUT if I am ever in the situation to do so and the urge strikes me to shoot one from the limb, I will bust him wide open. It is not illegal in TN and im pretty sure that every single one of you including the great Setterman, puts their boots on everyday the same way I do so who are any of you go judge me for doing something that is perfectly legal?

As I said, I don't do it that way but if I did, why would any of you think that your that much better than me and be able to judge me for it?
