Yessir, they sure are. Even with this monsoonal rain and gale force winds, the hunting has been good. We've killed three in three days here in the NF. I killed a suicidal 2 year old at 12:25 today. Got up this morning and seen it was pouring and wind was cranking. Went back to bed and headed to the woods around 11:00. Parked at a gated road that has a real pretty 1.5 acre planted wheat field not 200 yards from the gate. Spot gets absolutely hammered by the googans and everyone else. Regardless of pressure, there is always a Gobbler or two set up on the ridges above and bench below. Got out and got my stuff together and just leaned against my truck and decided to listen for a few minutes, as the wind had lulled. Within minutes a crow fires off towards the back side of the field and a turkey gobbles. He's down on a pine bench below the field. I know the ground well and work my way to a proven kill spot. I get about 75 yards from where I want to be and he hammers at me walking in the leaves about 25 yards past my intended position. I decided to try him from where I was and found a good tree. Got settled in and gave 'em a few sharp, popping clucks on my wingbone yelper. Had no sooner tucked it back into my shirt pocket, slipped a mouth yelper in, and pulled up my facemask, when I caught his snow white crown bobbing through the pines coming on a dead run. Moved my gun from my knee to my shoulder when I could, got on his neck and turned 'em a flip at 17 steps. Was over in less than 25 minutes.
You know I don't fool around with landowners "field pets". Nothing more "tame" than field turkeys. You do know that spending all day in a wide open field is a "domestic" trait. They are afraid of the damm woods for Christ sake :lol:
