UFC 117 Silva vs. Sonnen Official Thread

It would help alot with splitting the cost.

When people come to my house to watch the fights... since they had to drive and spend gas money. I usually just tell em to bring some drinks and snacks..

I think it's a good lineup of fights. I think Dana white wants to give Anderson a chance to redeem himself, but recognizes the necessity of having other big names on the fight card to attract casual fans who may still feel slighted by the spiders last "performance".

Fitch and Alves should be good. Fitch is aware of the reputation he's gained of being a "decision" fighter, so I expect him to be more aggressive with submission attempts. Alves should be looking for the early knockout as Fitch has shown tendency to eat too many shots especially when pressured. I expect Alves to be aggressive from the start. I think the fight will hinge on Fitch's standup defense and his ability to keep Alves on the ground, which is a difficult task.

Hopefully "Big Country" will come in with a gameplan to take Dos Santos to the ground. Nelson can bang, but he is really a much better grappler than striker. I expect Dos Santos to respect the power of Roy's wild punches, and wait for opportunities and openings.

I hope the main event will be as entertaining as all the pre-fight hype. The UFC has never had a fighter as charismatic as Sonnen. In many ways, he is the perfect opponent for Silva. He has the personality to attract fans for a fight with Silva, in whom many fans have lost interest. Also, he may have the ability to challenge Anderson on the ground, which is really the only area Silva has shown weakness. Anderson will expect and attempt to time Sonnen's takedown attempts, so Sonnen will have to set them up with calculated striking exchanges to avoid knees. I think the fight hinges on Sonnen's ability to take and endure punishment in attempting to bring the fight to the ground. If he can't get it there, then I think he has problems.

Can't wait for this card, new to the forums by the way.

Silva if he shows up like an animal will murder Sonnen in the 1st.
Sonnen could take the fight to the ground and it could get interesting, but Silva could pull it off down there as well.

I just don't like Silva.. I sooo hope somebody knocks his head clean off his shoulders. Maybe then he will stop playing around, punching guys in the knees and all that..

I'll go out on a limb here and say, if he does that again with Sonnen. I bet Dana White will do something about it this time. Maybe make him go up to 205, drop the belt, something.

I agree with Shane, but I honestly don't think Sonnen will be the guy to do it.

I agree on the Sonnen part. All of the smack talk is to sell tickets/pay per views as usual. If Silva shows up and fights like he is capable of I think he will wipe Sonnen out. If Sonnen fights aggresive like he says he will, I think he will get caught on the way in and Ko'd. I'll take Silva by 1st or 2nd round KO, but maybe I'm wrong. Guess we'll see tonight.

I got Anderson by TKO 2nd round.

Roy Nelson lasted all 3 rounds with Junior Dos Santos. It wasn't even a close fight and Roy got hit by every hard shot JR threw. He just couldn't knock the fat guy out.

Matt Hughes submitted Almeida with a wrestling neck lock in the first.

Clay Guida broke Rafael Dos Anjos jaw in the first and then was able to get a pain submission on him in the third.

Sonnan won the first 4 rounds and then got tapped out in the 5th.

I think Silva will actually show up this time partly due to Sonnen being aggresive and coming to him. My picks :

Silva : KO or TKO
Fitch : unanimous dec.
Guida : split dec.
Hughes : dec or sub
Dos Santos : KO or TKO

I guess I done pretty fair on my picks, at least I went 5 - 0 on the winners even if the fights didn't finish the way I thought. Sonnen done better than I thought he would, but I thought the fight should have been stood up several times during the rounds. Sonnen controlled the rounds but didn't really do much damage and to me it got a little boring watching him land hammer fists from 2 inches away that wouldn't have hurt me. He gave Silva his hardest fight in the UFC no doubt and we'll probably see a rematch down the road. All in all it was a good night of fights and I was glad that Hughes did well and won again, man he's hard on the Gracie camp. The most entertaining fight of the night IMO was Big Country and Dos Santos. It was toe to toe and Big Country took some shots but didn't quit.

Awesome night of fights I thought, Nelson vs. Dos Santos was a slugfest, Hughes pulling out that sub, Clay just being Clay, Fitch vs. Alves wasn't that exciting, then Sonnen manhandling Silva for 20 mins then getting tapped with a min left. CRAZY

I really like "Big Country" Nelson and had hoped he would win.
With that disclaimer out of the way, he fought an stayed active for 3 rounds so he has good cardio and physical shape. He took some hard body shots and acted as if they didn't hurt so his muscle tone is strong. He must be burning 5-6,000 calories a day with all the training he does. He weighed 263 at the weigh in. Rogan was talking about how bad Nelson needed to lose weight so he could compete at the higher level.

So..........how fat would this guy be if he wasn't training as hard as he does?
