Will Tn. ever allow straight walled cartridges in MZ?

Muzzle loader, I'm good with keeping the season at it is. I always liked the different seasons, in that everyone was using similar equipment that is. I really don't care for rifles or shotguns being initially used when bow season traditionally starts, even tho I don't bow hunt hardly anymore. Just a preference, and that means diddly squat as well. 😄

Once states started legalizing those nitro guns, it was the end of muzzle loader season

just my opinion

Correct, but what about the rest of us.
Guess the rest complained about it enough for them to change it for 2024-25. Glad we didn't sell our accuras like many others did. What's funny about all this is that some, who griped about it being unfair for cwd unit hunters to get to hunt with rifles early, posted pics of their success with rifles before statewide rifle season opened.🤔 Sure some get lucky and get to rifle hunt early on quota hunts or wmas, but what about the rest of us......

Far as the straight wall, I may or may not have won a 45-70(online contest ended in September and I have not received anything yet), not so sure it has any advantage over my accura aside from being able to chamber a round faster than reloading. I think the accura actually has better ballistics. Most deer I killed with muzzleloader required just one shot, chambering a second round a few seconds faster isn't really a huge advantage.

Was it complaints or did the Twra realize doing away with muzzleloader season had little to no bearing on anything.

If it will get more people in the woods, I'm for it. To me it will open the season up for younger hunters who are capable of handling a small straight wall cartridge rifle (such as the 350 Legend). Furthermore, your average straightwall is going to be ballistically equal to most inline MLs and a touch behind the higher horsepower smokeless guns.

From what I was to understand, it was complaints, crying over how it was unfair to the rest of the state. They didn't really do away with muzzleloader season in cwd unit, they just allowed for rifles during the statewide muzzleloader season in cwd unit, anyone that wanted to could still use their muzzleloaders. Also gave opportunity to hunt with rifle that week of archery immediately following the juvenile hunt.

They also changed back away from allowing rifles during the August velvet hunt in cwd unit. Shame they went back, but is what it is....

If the goal is to stop CWD why go back?

Especially on private land?
Exactly. I took advantage of the early rifle in cwd in both 2022 and 2023, may otherwise not have killed the deer last year because he may not have hung around. Killed him before the statewide muzzleloader opened, he was well within the effective range of a modern crossbow. The 2022 deer was in bow range and killed during the muzzleloader season.

My assumption is then not enough people were using cartridge rifles to bother to continue the special regulations

But I don't have any data to back that up

Not sure what I'm going to do with all these guns if there is not a season.
just hunt with them when legal. killed my first archery buck during BP season, and first BP deer during rifle season. i sure wouldn't sell my rifles because they were no longer an advantage... are any of them side-hammer guns?

Don't change ML season! The only reason I have a ML is to get into the woods earlier than rifle season.

Anyone that wants to do the same can also get a ML!

I just wish they would move that KY ml weekend to the weekend before rifle opens in KY. That would be a great opportunity and everyone has a one buck limit.

Nothing wrong with using a straight wall cartridge gun and there's already a season for it..👍
It's a personal choice. Just do it!

I enjoy muzzle loader season so much I hunt with mine on almost every hunt I go on now..
When legal of course. ( not during bow season)

After being loaded since opening weekend of muzzleloader season , I decided Friday it was time too unload it.

It's a flintlock and everyone knows how finicky those things can be…🥴

Not the biggest buck in the woods , but he will eat ….well.👍

My gun functioned as it should have going off without any delay and hitting its mark at 65-70 yards broad side.

The shot penetrating both lungs with full body pass through.

A .54 cal self poured roundball , patched with pillow ticking measuring .016 pushed bye 70 grns of Goex fffg real , black powder.

He ran about 100 yards …

Out of all the people promoting the straight wall cartridge guns use during m/l season…
How many of you Guys used one this season?

Kill anything?

Inquiring minds want to know…🤣😎

I don't see the need to change. The deer in TN already get pounded enough for over three months and we can kill two bucks still. Personally I would keep muzz and rifles both out of the entire month of November, I would be game for a traditional open sight muzz to be used in Nov, no different than modern crossbows anymore. Maybe have a week of open scoped muzz first week of Nov when the bucks start chasing a little. Do that after a week of rifle season in mid Oct and then rifles again in Dec until end in first week of Jan. Let youth use a rifle same weekend as the bow opener but make it a week. I know this is an unpopular opinion but let's face it buck age class sucks in most of TN.
