Live from the stand 2023

Opening day of ky rifle here. Small bucks are chasing does hard.

Got a late start and bumped several walking in this morning. Only seen a few so far, fawn running around and looked to be another fawn. View attachment 202966View attachment 202967

I'm not seeing a lot either. Did a blind grunt sequence and over the course of about 20min had several does and a few young bucks come through investigating. Two of the does and one forky came right to my tree. Otherwise everything is staying in the shadows of this bright sun.

Wife hunted our little field both yesterday and Saturday mornings. She was covered up in deer, got pics of several of them on my cell cam. She saw 8 different bucks yesterday morning, a lot of chasing. Last activity on my cell cam yesterday morning was at about 10:30, and only one deer, little buck, has been back by that camera since. She went back to the same stand yesterday afternoon and got skunked.

With all the chasing she saw yesterday morning, I figured they would be moving good down in this little bottom area this morning, does like to hide in the thick stuff and bucks will come through looking for them. I walked in right after legal shooting light, I did bump several on a hillside next to my pasture on the way. Then bumped a couple more as got closer to the stand.

First hunt for whitetail for me this morning in NE. Season opened Saturday but guided my 72 yr old buddy for mule deer first two days. He killed yesterday afternoon so I have 4 days left to hunt. Got creek bottoms, shelterbelts & crp leading to 57 acre alfalfa field. Another buddy hunting other side of area past couple days has seen lots of hard chasing including a 160 class that didn't slow down long enough for shot on Saturday. Wind not bad right now but 20-30 this afternoon with higher gusts.

Sounds like my yesterday. Today is a lot slower. Three spikes under me now or I'd go home. I think the older bucks are with does.
Had a doe with clean white tarsals get around behind me, she had a tiny fawn with her. Got down a little while later, and bumped two out of the gully that runs behind my house. I am pretty sure it was a buck and doe, but couldn't tell what he had for antlers, too much vegetation between them and me. Think your assessment, that big bucks are locked down with the does that are ready is spot on.
