There has not been 12,000 birds killed on WMA. It's a glitch. Go to statewide Hunter success and include WMA. It shows how many people have killed turkeys and how many they have killed . Over 18, 000 people have killed turkeys. How could only 15,000 total be killed?

Not sure what is going on, my computer won't allow me to click any add WMA to it. when I proceed it shows only 16K turkeys killed.

Based on what I have seen in this thread, any harvest numbers pulled from the website or app should be discredited. Nobody is getting the same results when attempting to pull the numbers. Obviously there is a glitch in the software or something.

When I run the report using google chrome I get 16,092 total kill. When I run the exact same report using internet explorer 30 seconds later I get 27,416 total kill through today.

Pace is still way behind 10 year averages, but at least we will end up with more than last year. I'm sure we've already lost an unusually high number of nesting hens this year due to the wet spring, (hen predation loss is higher in wet years since predators can smell them better), but hopefully the ones left have a good hatch for 2 years from now.

Found a nest a 2 weeks ago on a friend of mines place with 17 eggs in it, checked on it last week and something had killed the hen but all the eggs were still intact. We saw two coyotes the morning that we checked on the nest within 300 yards of it so I'm sure they are to blame. They are fixing to get it.

Hate to hear this about the hen. The predators and egg eaters that target turkeys are very numerous and unfortunately very successful.

they aren't always that successful. I've seen a particular coyote that had a taste for turkey a few years ago, but as a whole I've seen good hatches year after year despite high coyote and raccoon populations everywhere I hunt. Predators are bad but turkeys are also resilient. If you've got a predator problem I'd think trapping is the only efficient way to get rid of them.

I still get no where near this number using the hunter's toolbox no matter if it's the app, IE, Google Chrome or Foxfire.

I created a report with this tab, Turkey Harvest Report by County / WMA. I used statewide then went back and added WMA as a separate report. Only 1,257 killed on WMA as of 9:00am on 5/06. State has 17,245 for the same time. That's a total of 18,502 for the 2019 season.

When i go to Biologic Data report, it comes back with 17,187 for the state excluding WMA. WMA shows 1,256. That makes a total of 18,443 for 2019. Statistically close enough to say both methods are with in reason.

When I did the statewide harvest reporting tab I got the following. 17,217 birds harvested excluding WMA by 12,690 hunters.

Using the Hunter Success by County I get 17,256 total excluding WMA. Sounds like there is lots of big issues with the data collection process or there is a issue with # of birds we have in the state.

Interesting stats from MO.

2019 & 2018 – Worst Missouri Spring Turkey Hunting Seasons in 17 years.

Welcome to the NEW NORMAL - Missouri has become the LOST TURKEY HUNTING MECCA in the early 2000's highlighted in every magazine, outdoor TV show Missouri Spring Season Statewide has fallen off the shelf and has become a secondary thought of a place to travel for turkey hunting.

You won't read this from the Missouri Department of Conservation, National Wild Turkey Federation and the Missouri Media will only regurgitate what they put out.

Don't believe me look up the information and good luck with that because most is not published anymore has to be requested.

Not one thing by itself, but all together will influence major population decline.

1. Price of furs near all-time low, less trappers, more predators, no extended days for trapping.
2. Missouri Wild Hog Population Highest ever estimated 70,000
3. Black Bear Population Highest ever 2012 – 350 today estimated closer to 600.
4. Habitat Lose both Private & Public land Hunters are older,
5. Armadillos population on the rise and expanding north, may not eat eggs but destroy nest in searching for insects and grubs.
6. 17 years of bad hatch due to weather not likely. But some years yes.
7. More efficient fall hunting methods.
8. Fall Hens still being shot – Dead hen can't lay eggs and may not matter when population was higher, but now it does.

Word on the street that the Missouri Biologist and Directors are pushing for an all-day spring season and with no change to fall firearms or archery season for turkeys.
Now Some interesting number on Statewide Hunters and Spring Turkey Harvest numbers for past 17 years.

2019 – Turkeys 38,780 – 2nd Lowest Harvest in 17 years
2018 – Turkeys 35,787 – Lowest Harvest in 16 years.
2017 – Turkeys 43,356
2016 – Turkeys 48,374
2015 – Turkeys 48,432
2014 – Turkeys 47,601
2013 – Turkeys 46,141
2012 – Turkeys 44,766
2011 – Turkeys 42,220
2010 – Turkeys 46,194
2009 – Turkeys 44,713
2008 – Turkeys 46,134
2007 - Turkeys 48,472
2006 – Turkeys 54,712
2005 – Turkeys 57,743
2004 – Turkeys 60,744 Most Turkey ever killed

Comparison of average Missouri Trappers Association Fur Auction prices over the last five trapping seasons with a five-year average.
Just one example of a Predator – Raccoon

2017-18 $4.86 - 26,340 Sold
2016-17 $2.77 - 32,106 Sold
2015-16 $5.84 - 34,758 Sold

2013-14 $13.04 – 134,715 Sold
2012-13 $20.79 – 138,865 Sold

If you want to understand how that effect population These number are reflective across the board on less predators been taken.

2017 Wild Hog Reports in 45 counties in Missouri per USDA APHIS map and Mark Twain National Forest population estimates of 20,000 to 30,000.

In Missouri for the first season that included crossbows (2016-2017), of the 2,304 turkeys harvested under archery methods, 853 were with crossbows." (2017-2018) of the 2,426 turkeys harvested under archery methods, 45% or 1,113 were with crossbows.

"The Tennessee Fish & Wildlife Commission significant changes in the state's hunting regulations this last fall 2018 - For turkey hunters, the biggest change was banning the killing of hens during the fall season. Every hen that survives through the fall will be around to nest the following spring. The Commission agreed with that logic." But NOT MISSOURI

Did you know that 1974-75 - Bag limit reduced to 1 bird due to poor hatch in 1973. Guess they don't care about that for the last 17 years.

It is no surprise to anyone in the know that the 2019 Spring Season in Missouri was going to be a challenge, even the MDC predicted it (see first link below). MDC knows this because they conduct thorough brood surveys, use science, and stagger their bag limits over a few weeks to ensure there is a huntable sustainable turkey population in out years. Missouri had a bad hatch in 2016, floods of record in 2017 totally wiping out the hatch in a lot of the state (very few 2 year olds this year) and some terrible weather over their 3 week season this year, which makes the 38k pretty impressive in my opinion.

https://huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/sites/defau ... ey2019.pdf

This graphic shows most of the State had 1.5 - 2 times more rain than normal over their 3 week hunting season. Not the best conditions for hunting by far. They had a lot of wind the first week, and numerous rainy days all three weeks.

This graphic shows most of the State had 3"+ of rain the last week of turkey season in MO. Overall, just a poor weather year to turkey hunt in MO.

I was fortunate to hunt a lot in MO during the heyday and it really was amazing but that was 15-20 years ago. The slide is certainly easier to see in hindsight but even as it got worse it was still pretty good when compared against other states. To be right honest if you you looked at a kill/sq. mile, TN might surpass MO and several other states known as turkey Meccas.
MO 38780 birds / 69718 sq mi = 0.56 birds/sq mi.
TN 30000 birds / 42143 sq mi = 0.77 birds/sq mi

You'd have subtract non-huntable acres and metropolitan areas but it's a ballpark figure.

I don't think it would be close f you open MO up to 4 tags in 4 days. MO season is structured to prevent over harvest during times of recession like they are experiencing now, and their harvest data reflects that. MDC is the pinnacle of turkey management in my opinion.

And factor in bag limits (opportunity per license sold).

Agree Andy. I didn't take either of those into account...just raw numbers...dead turkeys and square miles. If MOs limit was higher and season longer, they'd likely be back to the heyday in terms of harvest. Those are some of the turkey killinest hunters I've ever met. Flat turkey slayers.

28,708 total turkeys as of right now. 216 of them are hens. Dates are March 13 to today, statewide, WMAs, etc, all included.

what are you using to get this data? I can't seem to find anything that's putting us over 20k yet.
