Stick n String Turkey Hunters

Every year I have friends say they are going to hunt with bow after they kill some with the gun. By this time the turkeys are pressured and do not respond well to decoys and calling. I recommend dedicating the first weekend to the bow. Take advantage of the unpressured birds.

I am going to try with my bow first. But plan on hunting with a buddy and he will be back up with a shotgun. Just in case he hangs up at 40yds. I hate to see one leave once in range.

I have a wee competition goin on with BGG on who gets a turkey with a bow this season...

...and I have no intention of losing.

(Granted, we're so competitive its almost a handicap!)

There needs to be some grounds rules first!

...such as no shooting off your front porch! If I shoot off my front porch all I might kill is my neighbor's Subaru.

(Which would actually put me ahead of you....hmmmm.)

Three words, BGG, that you need to work on:
location
Location
LOCATION!

I was fortunate enough to take 2 with bow during Spring season. A bearded hen and a nice tom. One of the properties I hunt is in city limits so it is bow only. I was amazed at how tough those darn birds are. It literally sounds like you hit a cinder block. One was down in less than 5 yards and the other went about 250 with my arrow hangin out before piling up. Ready for the 29th!!!!

Stuck two myself last season. The first I was sending a expandable, flop right there, cut him wide open. The second a fixed broadhead, right through but the bird scrambled off. Had to blood trail him just like a deer for almost 60 yards. Found him under some brush, almost missed him they blend in so well amazing. Swapped back to a expandable, messy oh ya but toast right there. :D

Mine were Rage 2 blade chisel. The hen was a perfect shot and I thought the tom was a pretty good shot too. He was quartering away and I sliced the back of the drumstick down to the boned and completely shattered the breastbone. NO IDEA how he made 250 yards other than sheer toughness. I got a tip from my brother the recovery rate with the arrow still in the bird is much higher than a pass-thru. So I shot my rage into a foam target a few times to take a the edge off a bit and made sure the heads and blades would still spin test and went 2 for 2. Not sure it had anything to do with the success, but you bet I'll follow the same practice this year!!

I am tempted by the mechanicals for stopping power and quicker kill, since I'm not worried about pass-throughs or tough shoulder bones like with a deer. However, I don't want the breast cut in half, I do like to eat the turkeys too. Blood clotted meat is the worst.
