Velvet

Are the antlers still growing as long as they are in velvet. Or have most reached the point of topping out. I don't hunt the velvet hunt just because I always thought they probably had more growing to do. But I also get the cool factor in it.
Last little push. Most are just filling out now. The velvet hunt is so close to when they are coming out of velvet they are done just have to rub the velvet off. I killed a deer in 2022 the day after Thanksgiving in full velvet. But he only had one nut.

Look at the tips of the points and beams. If they are still a bit bulbous, and have a dark shiny tip, they are still growing. Once they stop growing the tips narrow down to a point and get lighter in color.

Here is a few of the bucks that have showed up at my place so far. The first is a decent 8 point that showed up 2 days ago, the 2nd one is a 7 point, and the 3rd is from July 5th and had some nice brows but hadn't filled out his main frame yet. The big brows might end up being a shooter along with the 8 but the 7 and the 8 will probably get a pass. This is in East TN mountains in God's country.

That pic is out of state on our illinois farm. All the ones around here are one more year. Here's a couple pics on the locals. I've done a ton of work on my property here as far as management and really trying to hold back temptation to only pulling the trigger on older bucks(like 5yo olds)!

thinking one in middle is 4. The temptation may get me on him i was to see him.😁

Well it's at least time to get a little more motivated. Here's some velvet action from last year… I glassed up a shooter last night! I'm hoping to get some pics of him by this weekend.

I do not have anything of interest now. I wouldnt hunt in august regardless of how big a buck was but im hoping something will show up and still be around come October 1st

I had one little basket 8 July 10th, but haven't had him on camera since. Other than that only a little 4 point is regular on my camera. We don't have any ag on the property I hunt on, so I am hoping they shift when the oaks start dropping.

othing special antlerwise (other than being a 10-point) but his body makes me think he's an older buck, which is what I'm after.

I'm in same boat except with 8 pointers. I'm still unsure if these two are 2yr & 3yr olds or 3yr & 4yr olds. I haven't looked at last year's album to identify them yet. Either way, nothing I'm going to swat mosquitoes & dehydration to hunt. Looking forward to the fall shift to see what comes in.

I looked over 35 to 40 bucks in bachelor groups this past weekend on a scouting trip up in TN. Nothing worth shooting during the velvet hunt, a couple in the high 120s/ low 130s. 3 culls. LOTS of 2.5s and 3.5s in mid 110s.

Got cameras out to help find a shooter on other places.

I'll be back up for the velvet hunt, but may not hunt it again this year unless something in the 140s turns up. Be working on fall plots instead.
