Video from the other day

What is everyone arguing about?
I don't think anyone is arguing, just trying to educate and explain ON A PUBLIC FORUM that some shots are better than others, no different than shooting a deer broadside, or shooting one straight on. Sure, you can kill one shooting straight on, but if you shoot enough, you are bound to lose one, or several, over time. Same with shooting a strutting turkey. If you, or others, or the young kids who read these forums, want to see for yourself, try to shoot everyone you see in strut, over several years, and report back to the group after you have shot at 50 or so (decent sample size to have a valid claim). I would like to see if the kill percentage is as high as many here claim it would be.

With today's ammo and chokes, a 35 yard shot on a full strut turkey facing directly at you ..........
This point about today's ammo increasing your odds may be valid, and something I gave a lot of thought to over the past several days. To put my viewpoint into perspective (don't shoot strutting turkeys unless in self defense), it was before the HTL ammo trend days (> 15 years) since I have shot one in full strut. Since those days, I have yet to encounter a strutting turkey that I could not get to break strut long enough for me to kill him. My .02

Andy S......We must keep in mind we have prolly missed more birds than the guys, who think shooting birds in strut is ok, have ever killed. Not trying to brag but I think its safe to say I was chasing birds before Catman and some others were born. Although I know better than try to convince them of this but Its much easier to kill a sack of birds today than it was 25-30 yrs ago....Years ago if I missed one I my season was prolly over, now a days these guys just ride around and look for another one to fan. It amazes me how these hard core turkey killers don't even own a call nor do they wear camo when they "hunt". Just to clarify I am not pointing fingers at anyone on TNDEER, I am just speaking in general with heavy reference to the area in which I hunt.

Andy S,
I see your point and will agree that some shots are better than others. And Yes..... I know this is a PUBLIC FORUM.
However, my point is a valid one as well. At 35 yards, with today's ammo and chokes, most turkeys will die graveyard dead if shot in the head/neck area. Notice I said "most". As with any hunting, nothing is 100% guaranteed.

Roost 1,
this is my 25th year to turkey hunt and i am no young gunner. I have seen a lot of stuff come and go in those years. Within those 25 years, some of my "old school" thinking has changed because of the vast improvement of ammo and chokes. 10+ years ago, I would not have taken a 35 yard shot at a full strut turkey facing me. My pattern was too open and scattered. Today, I would pull the trigger every time because I have confidence in my "set up".

I tend to take the high percentage shot when it presents itself and not wait.

Either way, this discussion has many valid points and all are correct to the individual making them. It is up to the shooter/hunter to do their homework and figure out what works best for them.

Keep on keeping on, Catman. At least you didn't reap him. Thanks for sharing the video, I loved watching him strut.

I've killed truckloads of turkey including a pile in strut. I honestly can't recall missing or not recovering one shot while in strut. What does stand out to me over the years is that if I fudge an opportunity, the bird has almost always been moving. I am 100% confident in my gun and ammo and will bust one in strut all day long if he isn't willing to drop it. That being said, in this situation I would have tried to get him to raise his head. If he refused to cooperate, BOOM!

I told him to yell at the bird to get his head up but right then he shot...

What was your reasoning for doing that?

Because he knows it a higher percentage shot but for some reason he is trying defend a bad decision by his partner.

And that right there is my issue with this entire thread ^^^^^. It was a bad decision by his partner. Not him. He was merely sharing a video and everyone wanted to add their two cents in. MAYBE he knows it is a higher percentage shot with the neck up, MAYBE he doesn't think it matters either way, and MAYBE he wants to defend his friend, because he is his friend, but none of that matters, because he didn't shoot the turkey. A member on this forum did, but you guys aren't PM'ing him, you are talking too, teaching, scolding (however you want to term it) the guy that posted the video. All because he said, he told FF to get him to stick his head up to spare the meat and won't say it was because it was a lower percentage shot. Who cares. You know what even if he had said, "Get him to stick his neck up, because you don't want to shoot one in strut, FF may have just pulled the trigger anyway. Cat didn't have control over the situation.

Rant over. Great Video Cat, Congrats FF on a nice bird.
