Seriously, I believe the baiting problem is greatly under-appreciated, and a much bigger part of our reported kill than TWRA is admitting.

I know it is. I took this bird this past weekend on one of my TN farms that usually has 3 or 4 toms on it every spring. Not a single tom opening week, only 5 jakes. I couldn't figure out what happened this year. Sounded like the neighbors had a shooting gallery opening weekend however....

While hiking it this past weekend, I struck a bird on the neighboring property mid morning, called him over to me, and killed him. Mystery solved and explains why I heard so much shooting opening weekend on the neighboring property opening weekend. Crop was slap full of seed corn. I don't know for sure, but I betcha there is a pop-up blind 30 yards from a big bait pile over there.

I've said it before...some non-hunting friends said they don't know anyone that DOESNT use corn to kill turkeys in Lewis county. Everyone they know (which obviously isn't everyone) uses corn to kill turkeys.

That looks like seed corn treated with Captain (it looks pinkish to me). I know people bait, but I doubt anybody does it with $200/bag treated seed. I've watched turkeys in freshly planted fields walk down rows picking seeds out like they knew the exact spacing. Corn planting is in full swing now. Are there ag corn fields nearby?

I would be in favor of it. Also wish they would protect bearded hens.
Here in Arkansas this is the last season for bearded hens. Starting 2021 they won't allow it. Not sure how long it's been since they made Jake shooting illegal but I'd be in favor of that too unless it was a juvenile.

It IS treated seed corn. There are several ag fields all around, but have been planted just yet. They are just now spraying most of them getting ready to plant the 1st week of May.

I assumed it was some leftover seed corn from last year from a distributor because you're right... who would spend $100 per bag to bait turkeys? :)

I have been told this by non-hunting friends in Giles co. too. Old co-worker told me all her male friends that hunt told here, you cannot kill deer or turkey without corn. This was in 2010 so pretty much the hay day of high turkey populations. I used to hunt her little 20 acres. Never had an issue killing deer, and saw turkeys all the time. Issue was I wasn't into turkey hunting like I am now and wasn't getting up that early to go shoot turkey, especially when i could go 20 minutes from the house and shoot them.
